Lines and Wrinkles

As we age our skin loses volume and elasticity and fat may gradually deplete around the eyes, cheeks and temples. These processes occur because natural substances such as collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid which provide the skin with structure and volume decrease with age.  Fortunately, natural dermal fillers that are identical to skin components, can be injected to return the skin towards  its original youthful state.

About dermal fillers
  • Dermal fillers are smooth gels that are based on our body’s own natural skin components. They may be injected to enhance lips, plump wrinkles, folds and hollows, and to restore lost volume in tear troughs, under eye hollows, sunken cheeks, temples and jowls. Dermal fillers are also used to soften and smooth some types of acne scars. Subtly used, dermal fillers can create a natural and refreshed appearance.
  • Dermal fillers are easily dissolved using an injectable enzyme if desired.
  • Dermal fillers offered at Heber Davis are long lasting but not permanent. Permanent fillers  have been associated with increased risk of serious complications such as infection, granuloma formation (permanent lump formation that can occur even years after administration), and incorrect placement. Permanent fillers cannot adapt to the inevitable changes that occur in our faces as we age. What looks good at 30 could well become a source of embarrassment at 50.
  • Dermal fillers do not correct wrinkles caused by muscle contraction. These dynamic wrinkles are better treated using anti-wrinkle injections. Some patients do best with a combination of dermal fillers and anti-wrinkle injections.
  • Australian law forbids the naming of these injectable products in a public forum. Brand names may be communicated in a private email. Contact us for more information.
What are the areas/conditions most commonly treated?
What does treatment with a dermal filler involve?
  • You will be seen by a doctor who will review your medial history, discuss your concerns, decide on the best treatment plan for you and inform you of potential side effects of treatment.
  • You will be shown before and after photos of other patients’ outcomes to give you a realistic expectation of your own result.
  • We will photograph the area to be treated and will use these photos to monitor your progress over time.
  • Ice, anaesthetic creams or injections and/or laughing gas will be offered to ensure your comfort throughout the procedure.
  • Treatment involves a series of injections into the lines, lips, wrinkles or fold of concern.
  •  Most injectable fillers are administered in just a few minutes.
  • More than one treatment may be required to achieve the best results. The first treatment lays the foundation for subsequent improvement or adjustment.
  • Many fillers are available to help restore a more youthful appearance but there are differences in the way each behaves and how long each will last. An important element to achieving successful results with dermal fillers is realizing that no one filler is ideal for all areas of the face. For example, lips tolerate fillers differently to cheeks, and not all fillers can be injected into the lips. Because of this, we will discuss with you which dermal filler works best in the area you want treated. In some cases, different fillers will be recommended for different areas of the face to improve the entire facial aesthetic, in a procedure known as a liquid facelift

How do I look after treatment?

Results are instant and most normal activities may be resumed immediately. Makeup may be applied as desired. Because some patients may experience temporary redness, swelling or bruising, treatments should not be scheduled just before an important event. We also recommend that you do not engage in excessive exercise, smoking or alcohol consumption for 24 hours post procedure to allow your skin to adapt to its new contours.

How long do dermal fillers last?

Improvements last from 6-24 months, depending on the filler used and area injected. Fillers break down more quickly in areas that move continuously such as the lips (6months) than they do in areas of relative rest such as the under eye hollows and cheeks (up to 2 years).

What are the side effects of filler treatments?

As with any treatment that punctures the skin, dermal filler treatments carry some risk of temporary redness, swelling, bruising or activation of pre-existing cold sore infections. See our suggestions to help you prepare for your dermal filler treatment.

We recommend that you avoid excessive exercise, smoking and alcohol for 24 hours post procedure to allow your skin to rest and adapt.

As a precaution, dermal filler treatments should not  be scheduled immediately before an important event.

Is there anyone who shouldn’t undergo dermal filler treatment?

Dermal fillers are not recommended for those who are pregnant or breast-feeding, who are allergic to hyaluronic acid products, who have inflammation or infection in the area to be treated, or who are intending to have chemical or laser peeling within a few months. Extra precautions may need to be taken in those who are allergic to local anaesthetics, who have any disease affecting the immune system or who are prone to keloid or hypertrophic scarring

Are dermal fillers safe?

Yes, dermal fillers have been used safely for cosmetic procedures for over 20 years. The fillers used at Heber Davis are made of substances that occur naturally in the skin. Risk of long-term side effects is negligible.

Most fillers used at Heber Davis are completely reversible and can be dissolved enzymatically within minutes if required. Read More >

Can dermal fillers be combined with anti-wrinkle injections?

Yes. Despite having different actions, dermal fillers and anti-wrinkle injections are commonly used together. In fact, anti-wrinkle injections often prolong the effect of dermal fillers. Anti-wrinkle injections relax the underlying muscle that causes expression lines, and dermal fillers provide volume to fill in static lines.
