Causes of Lip Wrinkles (also called lip lines, lipstick lines or smoker’s lines)
  • Ageing - As our skin ages it loses its collagen and elastin support and becomes lax. The lip gradually forms wrinkles, sags or lengthens. Loss of fat which occurs with facial aging also contributes to thinning of the lips.
  • Repeated Motion - Repeatedly pursing  the lips, whether through drinking through a straw, whistling, kissing or smoking is an essential cause of vertical lines on the lips. The strong muscle, the Orbicularis Oris, which surrounds the lips, purses them during these activities and over time this continual bunching etches lines and wrinkles into the skin around the mouth.
  • Thin Skin -The thinner your skin, the easier it is for lip wrinkles to form, which explains why women are more prone to lip wrinkles than men.
  • Smoking - Smokers develop lip lines far earlier than non-smokers. Chronic puckering  around cigarettes accelerates the etching of lines into the lips. Smoking also releases free radicals that accelerate further collagen and other cellular deterioration.

In spite of the connection between smoking and lipstick lines, not everyone with lip wrinkles smokes. Lip lines can appear on anybody.

Prevention of Lip Lines

Preventative measures include

  • Not smoking, and opting to have your next drink without a straw. If you notice any other habits that cause you to purse your lips excessively, make a note to avoid these movements. As for not puckering up for a kiss... What good is a life without lip wrinkles if there are no simple pleasures?
  • Applying  a factor 30+ sunscreen on a daily basis, whether or not you intend to be in the sun.   Excessive sun exposure is a major cause of skin deterioration in Australia.
  • Supporting and nourishing  your skin by following a cosmeceutical skin care programme. Cosmeceuticals contain antioxidants that help to combat free radical damage from sun and smoking.
Treatment of lip lines
  • Replace lost volume - soft, smooth dermal fillers help replace lost volume. They support the skin around the mouth and improve both wrinkles and the overall youthfulness of the face. Dermal fillers are injected superficially along the lines to help fill them in. Dermal fillers are temporary in effect and last between 4 and 12 months.   View video to see how dermal fillers correct lines and wrinkles>>
  • Restore definition to the boarder of the lips - Augmenting the lip helps to distend and fill lip lines as they cross the lip border, both minimizing their appearance and reducing lipstick bleed.
  • Decrease constriction of the lips - Tiny amounts of muscle relaxant injections placed at intervals around the Orbicularis Oris muscle reduce its power to pucker. Whilst effective, small amounts do not interfere with your smile. Muscle relaxant injections also help to extend the longevity of dermal fillers.
  • Wrinkles that are deeply etched into the skin and skin textural irregularities can be treated with the Erbium laser for long lasting

Other Lines Around the Mouth

Oral Commissures

The area at the corner of the mouth where the upper lip meets the lower lip is called the oral commissure.  With loss of elasticity and the downwards pull of gravity, this area often forms a depression as we age. In many individuals, this depression contributes to the formation of wrinkles and lines, and creates an angry, unhappy or stern appearance. Oral commissure lines may either extend downwards from the corners of the mouth, creating an unnatural puppet or marionette-type appearance, or fan out from the corners of the mouth.

Oral commissure lines are almost always treated with dermal fillers.  These fillers help fill in the depression and support and buttress the folds. As well, cheek volumisation using long lasting dermal fillers can also help create a subtle rejuvenation of the oral commissure area.

Muscle relaxant injections may also be used to help alleviate oral commissure lines. They help to lift the corners of the mouth by relaxing the muscles that pull the corners down.   See video of this treatment >>

Parentheses Lines

Some individuals develop lines that arc around the corners of the mouth and look somewhat like a set of parentheses.  These lines are usually an extension of nasolabial folds.   They are often shallow, fine lines that are treated much the same way as the marionette lines. Dermal fillers are placed along the line to help lift and fill it.
